Information Processing and Theoretical Physics

A popular currently held idea within the Physics community is that the Universe is a giant information processing system, and that processes like evolution are a natural and inescapable part of it. If so, how does this connect with our ideas concerning the use of computers? Where are we going with computing on a social, cultural and even biological level? Are we destined to only modify and control our lives with computation, or are we simply an intermediate step to something else?
