Flash

Flash addresses many of the same issues as AJAX. Some of them better, some worse (anyone seen the Flash implementation of Google Maps... it's *slow*). Macromedia and others have also created XML-based programming environments for rapid development of complex Flash solutions (see Macromedia FLEX for instance).
