Conceptual Symbolism

Some theories of intelligence revolve around the processing of symbols, whether by humans or computers. What role could a standard and formal symbolism, representing static and dynamic concepts as well as the relationships between them, play in the advancement of artificial intelligence? Is there merit in this approach? What work has already been done? What work should be done? Who should do this work? Could there be a resonance in this approach with work already being done in Systems Thinking and Numerical Modeling?
