New Software Paradigms

The future will not be about teaching students increasingly sophisticated versions of Microsoft Word. The future will not be about spreadsheets. Not about email. Not about the web. The future is about software which will require the user to be able to adopt unusual modes of thinking, unusual metaphors to operate it. Moreover, the future is about software that is going to take a specialized education just to _understand_ what it does, let alone learn how to use it. Software, in the best educational sense, will necessarily change the way users think. We will view our world differently because of the software we use. This will be the challenge of 21st century software and 21st century education and culture.
