The choice of a hardware platform, and of an operating system to run on it, is by far one of the most important decisions a computer user or IT manager will face.

Two large families of desktop and server operating systems exist. Deriviatives of Microsoft proprietary Windows and derivatives of the Unix family of operating systems, which including the major desktop branches Mac OS X and Linux.
